A periodontal examination is performed to diagnose gum disease. A
periodontal probe is used to make several measurements around each tooth.
Pocket depth is one measurement that is made six places around each tooth.
Pockets should measure 3 mm or less and not bleed when probed. Bleeding is
a sign of inflammation. X-rays are necessary to help assess bone loss.
